Halloween is approaching!
Halloween is fast approaching........ and it is a great time of the year to do something from a novelty point of view.
Whilst the average retailer in Australia doesn't think Halloween is much of a deal just think about these stats for a second:
In the US consumers spent approx. $350 Million USD on Costumes for Dogs at Halloween.
Approximatly $2.2 BILLION USD are spent of Treats, sweets and Lollies at Halloween.
The average American will spend close to $74.00 USD on Sweets and Treats.
Just think about that for a second..... It is huge in America!
Of course, it's not as big here in Australia, we all know that, however it is a retail event which is growing and one which should not be discounted.
According to a report in the Huffington Post, Woolworths stated that there was a 15% increase in sales from 2013 to 2014.
Retail analyst, Brian Walker, suggested 1 in 5 Australian will celebrate Halloween.
In 2016 Coles Supermarkets "doubled its range of Halloween merchandise, including costumes, decorations, party suppliers and trick or treat accessories and this year for the first time it's introduced Halloween-themed baking accessories."
Spotlight, in 2016, saw a 100% increase in Halloween sales from the year before!
The point here is that Australians are now celebrating Halloween with an increasing retail spend year on year.
The large retail chains, shopping centre managers and media outlets are all promoting the occasion. This shows they want it to grow........
What this should tell us in the pet industry is that it is a well established trend now and becasue of the highly public nature or the event, it is an opportunity for us all to get involved.
With this in mind, lets get ready for the event this year and take part in such a large retail opptunity.
Further to this, it's also an opportunity to have some fun with your shop and with your staff...
My suggestions are as follows:
Decorate your shop in a spooky way???
Get your staff, and your self, to dress up for the week leading up to Halloween.
Merchandise your store with Halloween themed products

Do a spooky social media campaign.
Just remember, it has become a large event in Australia, regardless of what our personal thoughts are.
